An obscene website was displayed on a digital podium outside the Ice Rink, at Southwater near Telford Shopping Centre.

An internal investigation has now been completed by Telford & Wrekin Council, which runs and controls the boards.

It has found that a glitch in the security system allowed for a member of the public to access the site.

Russell Griffin, of Telford & Wrekin Council, said that a thorough review of the security settings for the podiums would now take place.

"The council has now completed its investigation into one of its digital totem displays showing inappropriate content on its screen earlier this month," he said.

"The investigation has found that the content was displayed on only one of the four totems in the Southwater area. The evidence indicates that due to a glitch in the system’s security settings, a member of the public was able to search for and display the inappropriate content using the totem’s touch screen. We are sorry that our security settings were unable to stop this on this occasion.

"The content appears to have been on the screen for only a short period of time as it does not appear to have been seen by any other person in Southwater, though clearly it has been subsequently viewed more widely through social media."

The totems will be turned off for a period of time while upgrades to the system are made, preventing any similar incidents.

Mr Griffin said: "A thorough review of security settings for the totems is being undertaken to seek to ensure that inappropriate content cannot be accessed in future.

"The totems will remain inactive for a period of time. It was always intended that upgrades would be made to these around this time linked with the on-going work in Southwater to create a new public square."

An investigation into the incident was also launched by West Mercia Police, who said if there were signs of any criminal activity that they would work to find those responsible.

The signs usually show information about local businesses or events and are located throughout the Southwater area, including near the library and near the International Centre and Ice Rink.

They are controlled remotely by Telford & Wrekin Council, but had been intermittently displaying the Windows operating system prior to the incident instead of their usual adverts.
