1,700 street lights upgraded in Telford and Wrekin

Hundreds of street lights across Telford and Wrekin have been upgraded since April as part of a multi-million pound scheme.

Telford & Wrekin Council has started making the improvements as part of the Pride in Our Community investment programme.

The council will be investing £5.2m into street lighting over the next two years, which includes the upgrade of more than 20,000 street lights to LED.

Around 1,700 have now been upgraded.

The new LED lights use less energy, reduce pollution and aim to make it easier for residents to see things at night, helping to make areas safer.

The upgrade to LED lights will also save the council £420,000 a year through reduced maintenance and lower energy costs.

Angela McClements, Telford & Wrekin Council's cabinet member for transport, infrastructure and broadband, said: “We want the streets of our borough to be better lit and safer. The new lights will also be more cost-effective for us to run.

“Since the programme started this spring, we have upgraded the lights in areas such as Sutton Hill, St Georges, Priorslee and Halesfield industrial estate.

“On average, the council’s team has upgraded around 100 street lights a week.”

The next phase of works will be moving to new areas such as Woodside, Madeley, Wrockwardine Wood, Trench, Donnington and Muxton.
