Election debate will remember bomb victims

A general election Question Time organised by Telford and Wrekin Senior Citizens Forum which had been thrown into doubt by the Manchester bomb attack is to go ahead as planned.

Involving almost all the candidates for The Wrekin and Telford seats, it is at the Park Inn in Telford town centre tomorrow, Friday May 26, from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

“The message from Manchester is that we will not be cowed by such atrocities. If anything we need to show that we are even more committed to operate as a free and democratic country in acknowledgement of the victims of this horrendous act," said Dag Saunders of the forum.

Lynne Carney, project officer of the forum, added: “The debate is open to all older people from within the two constituencies, but others are welcome to attend. Nine of the 10 candidates from the two constituencies will be there.”

The missing candidate, due to work commitments, will be the Greens' Luke Shirley.

The event will use the format of BBC’s Question Time in which members of the audience will be able to propose questions which will then be put to the candidates.

“There is probably no better time to show that we care for the values of a free society, and we ask all older people particularly to come along and support us at this most critical time,” said Lynne.

The event will start with a minute's silence as a mark of respect to the Manchester victims.
