Ian Barge, of Ludlow, has created 'Let there be Light' in aid of the scheme which supports young people in south Shropshire with their mental health.

The fortnightly drop-in session launched at Ludlow Youth Centre earlier this year and is Mayor Tim Gill's chosen charity of the year.

"I hope 'Let there Be Light' will bring some delight to people in these days of grim news," Mr Barge said. "The world needs satirical humour more than ever before.

"Let's hope these irreverent verses raise a chuckle and help Tim's admirable chosen charity."

Mr Barge, a former head of English at Ludlow Grammar School, approached Councillor Gill with his idea last month.

Councillor Gill said: "Ian actually taught me English at school. We were talking one day about the charity and he was really interested.

"A little after he came to me and said he was going to produce a book of poems and said he wanted all of the profits to go to the mayor's charity. I was beyond touched."

'Desperate need'

The project, which has secured funding for its first year, needs £10,500 a year to run.

Nearly 50 young people and their parents or carers attended the first session.

Councillor Gill said there is a desperate need for the scheme in south Shropshire.

He added: "Shropshire Council is pulling out from youth services across the board. It's abandoning youths which makes Ludlow Young Health even more important.

"Thankfully the people of Ludlow have responded well and have donated or taken on their own projects like Ian. They can see that services which were once available years ago are not now."

Let there be Light is on sale for £5 at Castle Bookshop in Ludlow.
