Petition calls for school safety measures

More than 800 people have now signed a petition calling for increased safety measures outside a primary school.

The petition is calling for increased and improved signage, the speed limit reduced to 20mph, zig zag lines repainted and the appointment of a lollypop lady/man or a pedestrian crossing at Ludlow Infant and Nursery School.

MP for Ludlow Philip Dunne met with headteacher Val Matthew after the issue was brought to his attention, and has now written to the chief executive of Shropshire Council Clive Wright.

Nicky Stewardson, the parent of a child at the school, started the petition.

In it she writes that the school has been without any traffic slowing measures since last July when the lollypop lady of more than 35 years died.

She adds: "Having viewed this first hand as a parent from the school, it is very clear to see there is an accident or worse, a child's death, simply waiting to happen. Something must be done.

"The yellow zig zag lines outside the school gates are fading, the school gates themselves are not clearly visible and there is very very little signage alerting drivers to the risk of our very small children crossing the road."

Shropshire Council have been approached to comment.
