A record crowd attended the event at Stokesay Court yesterday and a record amount of money, in the region of £21,000, was raised for charity.

It was the dogs who stole the show, taking part in fun competitions from the scruffiness mutt to the best rescue dog.

There were also agility and obedience classes, and many other events.

The event is organised each year by Ludlow Rotary Club.

Spokesman, Mr John Wilson, said that this year's event had been a massive success.

"It was certainly a record year, absolutely superb," he said.

"We welcomed well over 3,000 people to Stokesay Court and have raised about £21,000. This is going to three main charities, Hope House Hospice, St Michael's Hospice in Hereford and the Guide Dogs association."

He said that the day had attracted all ages of both dogs and their human friends, from young children with puppies to some very senior dogs with their owners.

"The dog that had come from furthest was from the Cayman Islands," he said.

"Its owners are on holiday here and brought the dog over with a pet passport."

Now in its fifth year, Mr Wilson said the emphasis of the day was to have fun without the very serious competitions.

"Everyone certainly seemed to have fun, out enjoying the sunshine," he said.

Because of the weather the Rotary Club ensured there was plenty of shade for the dogs and their owners and also, plenty of water to drink.
