Elaine Brown, 69, died on August 26 after suffering a stroke as a result of the disease, which was linked to bacteria in the plumbing at the Feathers Hotel in Ludlow.

Mrs Brown, from Merseyside, had stayed at the hotel overnight on July 31.

The hotel has now made an admission of liability over Mrs Brown's death, paving the way for a financial settlement.

The move has been welcomed by Irwin Mitchell solicitors, which is representing Mrs Brown's family.

Roger Bishop of Wall James Chappell Solicitors, acting for the Feathers, today revealed the two parties hoped to agree a "reasonable and fair sum in the near future".

Co-operated

He said: "We are disappointed that Irwin Mitchell thought it appropriate to forward a press release on this matter at this time given that their client does not wish to comment or be contacted.

"The Feathers has fully co-operated both with the local authority and with Public Health England throughout.

"The hotel continues to strive to achieve high standards and maintain its long held reputation.

"We express our sincere condolences to Mrs Brown’s family and friends."

The historic 40-bedroom hotel reopened in November after a two-month closure for remedial work.

A Shropshire Council investigation is still ongoing.

The Feathers was put up for sale in January for more than £2.6 million and remains on the market.
