Ludlow MP Philip Dunne, a former defence minister, has been asked to conduct the review by Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson.

Mr Williamson revealed the appointment during a high profile speech where he said he had "no doubt" that an attack on former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury had come from Russia.

Speaking after his appointment, Mr Dunne tweeted: "Pleased to have been asked by Secretary of State for Defence Gavin Williamson to undertake review of contribution made by defence to UK prosperity.

"Hope my review will help support wider recognition of the economic impact of defence to the United Kingdom, particularly post Brexit."

During his speech Mr Williamson said: "Since strong defence underpins our nation’s prosperity, I have invited Philip Dunne to conduct a review to help demonstrate it is far more than an insurance policy, it’s an investment in jobs at home and exports abroad.

"He understands this sector extremely well and also brings an important independent perspective."
