The event was held in the park in Sandford Avenue, Church Stretton, on Sunday.

Councillor for Church Stretton Mike Walker said the event was arranged to get people in the park and put an event on for all the family.

He said: "We wanted to attract more young families and have a community day down there where people could come down and have a go at various activities.

"We had people trying bowling, tennis croquet, and we also had a climbing tower and a Punch and Judy man who was very funny.

"We had various groups at the event, including Chris Holland a keen story-teller from Devon who was doing a workshop, and brownies and guides and scouts.

"We had have-a-go sessions for all the family and demonstrations.

"There was music from a concert band and belly dancing.

"It was a really enjoyable day. I've never seen so many letters and emails afterwards about how good it was.

"We were expected between 100 and 500 people to turn up and in the end there were almost 700 people.

"We hope we're going to be able to build on this and put on similar events in the future."
