Tributes to Bishop's Castle man killed in Clun crash

Tributes have been made to man who died when his car overturned on a country road in the south of Shropshire.

Alex Horrocks, of Bishop’s Castle, has been named locally as the victim of the fatal crash which happened at about about 12.45am on Monday, on the A488 between Colebatch and Clun.

Mr Horrocks, a construction worker in his 30s, worked in Ludlow and was of the family that runs Horrocks Coach Travel, based in Lydbury North. He attended Bishop’s Castle County High School, now known as the Community College, in his youth.

It has been revealed that he was in the car with his dog Fletcher when it overturned while travelling along the winding road out of Clun, killing both.

Police are now calling for any witness to come forward to establish what might have happened leading up tot he crash.

A spokeswoman for the family said on Monday that they will contact people individually with more information about what will be happening in his memory.

She said: “Sadly, Alex Horrocks passed away last night along with his buddy Fletcher.

“Once we know what’s going on we will let everyone know in turn. He will be missed dearly by all of his family and friends.”

More than 200 people posted their condolences on a tribute post to Mr Horrocks on social media.

Adam Smith said: "Seriously struggling to believe what I'm reading here, I could never forget the good times and I never will. RIP old pal, see you in the next."

Tom Farr added: "I am devastated. You were always a true friend and words can't say how upset this terrible news has made me feel.

"I will miss you a huge amount and always look back on our long friendship with fond memories. This is so so sad."

Former Bishop's Castle mayor Karen Bavastock said: "I was so sad to hear this news. Alex was always polite and respectful and a very talented young man taken far to soon. My thoughts go out to his family."

Vicky Smith, speaking for West Mercia Police, said the force was investigating the crash and calling for witnesses.

She said: "The collision took place on the A488 at approximately 12:14am, where a Nissan Navara Aventura was travelling from the direction of Clun, towards Colebatch. It is believed that the vehicle left the carriageway and came to rest on the offside grass verge.

"The driver, a man in his 30s, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Next of kin and the coroner have been informed.

"Officers are keen to speak with anyone who saw the incident, who saw the vehicle and the manner in which it was being driven prior to the collision or who can help with the investigation."

Anyone with information is asked to call West Mercia Police on 101 quoting incident number 0007s of May 8.
