Serendipity and stars: The Milky Way above the Stiperstones

Serendipity played a part in Shropshire-based photographer Andrew Fusek-Peters getting this shot.

He and a friend had set out to snap the Aurora as it played above the Shropshire countryside but on reaching the Stiperstones he realised it was not to be.

Instead, as he pointed his camera skywards, the Milky Way came in to focus and the rising moon shone across the surrounding countryside.

“This is one of the best Milky Way shots I have taken,” said Andrew.

“We get quite a lot of light pollution in Shropshire, unless you are down in the valleys but everything came together for this shot.

"I was up on the Stiperstones ridge just as the moon was coming up.

“It just shows that Shropshire is a great place to come and take photos of the night sky and it was the perfect shot for my camera.”
