Spate of countryside fires across Shropshire

Firefighters were kept busy with a spate of fires out in the open across Shropshire overnight.

An agricultural baler and two bales were destroyed in a fire at Horton near Wem.

A fire crew from the town and one from Wem were called to the scene at 8.40pm and brought the incident under control by 9.25pm.

Fire crews from the south of the county managed to get a large grass fire under control in half an hour.

The fire, involving hedgerow, grass and undergrowth, broke out close to the A488 at Hanwood just after 6.30pm on Tuesday.

Firefighters from Church Stretton and Minsterley were quickly on the scene and quickly dealt with the fire, which covered an area 20 metres by 30 metres.

At Sutton Lane in Woodseaves, near Market Drayton, the local fire crew had to deal with a large rubbish fire at 9.15pm. Firefighters got the blaze under control by 10.05pm.

It comes after five fire crews were sent to deal with a field of straw on fire at Harmer Hill.
