Major delays on A49 and A5 around Shrewsbury

Motorists were today facing significant delays on one of Shropshire's major roads.

The A49 and parts of the A5 around Shrewsbury were gridlocked, with vehicles queuing for several miles and the exit to Sundorne Road was closed off next to The Shrewsbury Club

The AA said drivers using the roads faced delays of up to 17 minutes at the moment – with speeds reduced to around 10mph.

It is not currently clear what is causing the delays, which were stretching from the Emstrey Island on the A5 to the Preston Boats Island and on to Battlefield Roundabout on the A49.

There have been unconfirmed reports on Twitter suggesting that the delays are being caused by Sundorne Road being partially closed for white line engineering.

An update from the AA said: "Severe delays of 17 minutes and delays increasing on A49 Northbound between A5 (Preston Island) and A53 (Battlefield roundabout). Average speed ten mph."
