Emergency services were called out to reports of a man in the River Severn last night.

Police and three fire crews from Shrewsbury and Baschurch were quickly at the scene at the Castle Walk footbridge in the Castlefields area of the town.

A thorough search of the river was made in an operation lasting almost two hours.

A spokesman for Shropshire fire and rescue service said using specialist equipment officers could find no heat sources and no casualty was found.
