A collection of rare postcards dating back to the First World War has been donated to a charity shop in Shrewsbury.

The timely gift was brought into the Oxfam shop just days before the centenary of the end of the conflict.

Around 20 wartime cards featuring pictures of soldiers and religious imagery were discovered in the donated album, which contains 300 postcards in total, all from the early 20th century.

Some had been written on while others were left blank. It is hoped the album will drum up interest from collectors and raise hundreds for the shop.

"We get the odd small collection of postcards donated but we have never had this quantity before," said shop manager Tom Cotton.

"What is particularly nice about them is that there are hardly any scenic postcards in there, because while they are lovely they are fairly common.

"We are going to ask £300 for the alum. It is a very generous donation which we are very grateful for."
