The library, in Castle Gates, has been closed today while health and safety checks are carried out. It will also be shut on Wednesday.

One lane of Castle Street was shut this morning to allow for inspection of the building via cherry-picker.

The library's Twitter account posted saying: "Shrewsbury Library will be closed on August 21.

"This is due to falling masonry and for health and safety checks to be carried out. We will update you as soon as we know more. Sorry for any inconvenience."

The closure has meant that Shrewsbury Town Council offices have had to be relocated.

A comment from the council online says: "Please note that the Shrewsbury Library is closed on August 21 and this will impact on our offices as well.

"We are relocating to other places so please bear with us if you have any queries and do not get an immediate response from us."

Michael Lewis, library service manager, said: “In the interest of safety we have today closed Shrewsbury Library.

"Some debris has fallen from the building and, after taking advice from our emergency surveyor, we took the decision to close the library to ensure the health and safety of users of the building.

"Our main concern is the safety of our customers and the general public. Therefore we are taking these steps to ensure that no one is hurt as a result of any more falling debris.

"After the building has been assessed and measures have been put in place to ensure that visitors can safely enter and leave the building, the library will then re-open. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."
