Shrewsbury police helicopter search after river alarm raised

Emergency services including a police helicopter searched for a person who was seen standing the wrong side of the railing above the River Severn in Shrewsbury.

Police, the ambulance service, fire and rescue service and a police helicopter were sent to the scene on the A49 between Harlescott and Preston Island on Saturday at about 4pm.

A person had been seen standing on the wrong side of the railing but after a search the person could not be found.

Kieren Bodill, spokesman for West Mercia Police, said: “At approximately 4.07pm on Saturday, West Mercia Police received a call from a concerned member of the public who had possibly seen a man or woman standing over the railing on the wrong side of a bridge, in the area between Harlescott and Preston Island.

“The initial call received was made with good intentions.

“A thorough search of the river and embankments was conducted by police, ambulance service, fire and rescue and a police helicopter.

“This has resulted in no trace of anyone in distress.”
