Anne Tarbuck, 88, was airlifted to the Royal Stoke University Hospital after the collision on the A458 near Harley Bank near Much Wenlock at 3.10pm yesterday.

She was a passenger in a silver Volvo estate car and died in hospital following her injuries.

Her husband, Aubrey Tarbuck, the former mayor of Worcester, was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with chest and pelvic injuries.

Mr Tarbuck paid tribute to his wife from his hospital bed, describing her as a "wonderful woman."

The collision was with a silver Audi Q5, and it happened 400 yards north of the Plume and Feathers restaurant.

A young girl who was travelling in the Audi was treated for a head injury and taken to Birmingham Children’s Hospital by air ambulance.

Her father, thought to be man in his 30s, who was driving the Audi was treated for chest injuries that are not thought to be life threatening.

Three ambulances, three paramedic officers and the Midlands Air Ambulances from Cosford and Strensham, both with doctors on board, attended the scene.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Murray MacGregor said: “On arrival, ambulance staff found a car and 4x4 with significant front end damage. There were two people in each vehicle.

“In the car there were an elderly couple. The woman suffered multiple serious injuries. She was anaesthetised at the scene before being airlifted to the major trauma centre at Royal Stoke University Hospital in a critical condition.

“The man had no obvious injuries but due to the nature of the crash was taken by land ambulance to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital as a precaution.

“There was a father and daughter in the 4x4. The young child had suffered head and chest injuries. She was airlifted to Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

“Her father had suffered only minor cuts and bruises and travelled with his daughter in the air ambulance to the paediatric major trauma centre.”

Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision, or anybody who saw the manner in which the vehicles were being driven beforehand, to contact them on 101, quoting incident number is 415s of 26 October.
