Shrewsbury's English Bridge closed as 'vulnerable' man rescued

A vulnerable man in his 60s was rescued from the English Bridge in Shrewsbury in the early hours of this morning. Police closed the road in both directions from 4am while they dealt with the incident.

Officers spent more than two hours talking to the man in an attempt to diffuse the situation.

The bridge was closed at about 4am while emergency services worked at the scene.

Ambulance crews were also called to the scene and, once the man had been checked over by paramedics, he was detained under section 136 of the Mental Health Act and is currently receiving specialist medical care.

The road reopened to traffic at just after 6.30am.
