The man was trapped in his vehicle following the crash, which took place on the A49, between the Sundorne and Battlefield roundabouts at around 8.40am.

The road was closed while the vehicles are removed and oil and diesel is cleared up.

The cars involved in the crash were a black Mercedes, a white Ford Transit van, a white Citroen Berlingo, a silver Vauxhall Astra, and a white Renault van.

Paul Roberts of West Mercia Police said: "Police, fire and ambulance were called just after 8.40am to reports of a collision between Sundorne roundabout and Battlefield roundabout, involving a black Mercedes, white Ford Transit van, white Citroen Berlingo, silver Vauxhall Astra and a white Renault van.

"Highways are also attending due to an oil and diesel spillage on the carriageway and the road is currently closed between the two roundabouts while the vehicles are recovered."

Claire Brown, spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We had two ambulances and a paramedic officer on the scene. One man who was trapped in a vehicle required extrication from the fire service, that one patient has been taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, but it doesn't look like he has suffered any serious injuries.

"There were three other patients described as 'walking patients' who did not require hospital treatment."

The road was reopened just before 10.30am.
