Shrewsbury Masters Swimming Club's Severn Mile takes place on Sunday, with the swimmers setting off from the Sabrina boat jetty at 11am.

Bernard Wills, the club's chairman, said people can sign up for the event at Pengwern Boat Club from 8.30am to 10am, but warned the challenge is not for the inexperienced.

He said: "It is a challenging event. It is meant to be fun but if you are doing the mile it is a challenge to swim back against the current.

"It does not look that bad but you need to be fairly strong swimmer to swim back 450 metres against the current."

The event attracts people from across the country.

There are a number of prizes available for swimmers in different categories.

Last year's quickest time was 16 minutes for the course.

Two courses are available for the swimmers, the one mile course, which involves swimming back against the tide and a 750 metre one.
