All traffic on the Welsh Bridge in Shrewsbury was temporarily halted by police as concerns were raised for a man who had either jumped or fallen in the Severn at around 4pm.

There was gridlock around Frankwell and up Copthorne Road as a result while an ambulance crew was called and put on standby.

Paul Roberts, speaking for West Mercia Police, said: "Police were called to Welsh Bridge in Shrewsbury just before 4pm today, after concerns for the safety of a vulnerable man were raised.

"The man, believed to be in his 20s, is reported to have entered the water before being assisted safely to the river bank. He is being taken to hospital as a precaution."

The incident was dealt with and roads re-opened by about 4.30pm.
