Gateway to better footpaths

Footpaths in the countryside are getting some 'tlc' thanks to a group of volunteers.

The Selattyn and Gobown P3 group is helping to improve local pathways as part of a national scheme.

Recently the group installed a modern, galvanised steel, kissing gate on one of the footpaths to replace an old and unsafe wooden stile, making it easier for people to use the route. It was its first major work.

The project has been led by Helen Beresford from the Shropshire County Outdoors Department.

One of the volunteers, Mike McKennsa, said: "The work has greatly improved safety on this much-used shortcut."

The P3 team, which meets on the second Friday of each month, will carry out further improvement projects during coming months and says that additional volunteers are most welcome to join the group.

"Training will be given to develop practical skills towards greater access to our public rights of way."

Work could include waymarking of routes, vegetation clearance, repairing and/or replacing gates and stiles, innstalling small bridges and boardwalks, surveying local paths networks, organising local walks and producing leaflets.
