Friends group is optimistic about its work getting back on track this year

Volunteers who have been unable to continue their work to look after their railway during lockdown have submitted a bid to Wales in Bloom in the hope that they will be able to return to the platform soon.

The Friends of Chirk Station group has entered the It's Your Neighbourhood section of the scheme with fingers tightly crossed that the members can return to caring for the planters and other flowers there along with keeping it looking spick and span.

Previous award winners the group helped Chirk to win the best smallest station in the UK for its work before lockdown last year.

But apart from the few weeks in between lockdowns, volunteers have been unable to get involved because of the Covid rules.

Christine Ashford from the Friends said: "Wales in Bloom has accepted our entry and we are looking forward to when the station can be assessed for an award. Fingers crossed that it happens this year. Our planning has had to be virtual but it is good that we can look forward to a better future for all of us.

"Thanks to everyone who have supported our station adoption since 2004, especially the voluntary sector who have guided communities through Covid-19.

"The distinctive value and quality that volunteers contribute to an organisation or community comes from the fact that they choose to be there and that they are giving their time and involvement as a gift. Long may that continue in our community."

She said the group was very optimistic that when the lockdown is eased some of the community volunteers will re-start.
