Person dies after being hit by train at Shropshire level crossing

A person has died after being hit by a train near Oswestry this morning.

It happened at Western Rhyn Level Crossing, between Gobowen and Chirk at around 7.50am, with all lines blocked between Shrewsbury and Wrexham General this morning.

Arriva Trains Wales said that services between the stations had either been stopped completely or would be delayed for at least an hour.

An update from Arriva Trains Wales said: "Due to a person being hit by a train between Gobowen and Chirk the line towards Wrexham General is blocked.

"Train services running through these stations may be cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes. Disruption is expected until 10am."

British Transport Police has confirmed a person has died, and that it isn't being treated as suspicious.

A spokesman for the BTP said: "“Officers were called to Western Rhyn Level Crossing, Shropshire, at approximately 7.50am today after reports that a person had been struck by a train.

"Colleagues from the ambulance service also attended, however, a person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are working to identify the person and inform their family. The incident is not currently being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Alternative bus services were being set up between Shrewsbury and Chester.
