A Napoleonic re-enactment and siege has been held at the castle since 2016 and it thought to be the only one in the UK that features scaling ropes and ladders.

One of those involved, Huw Davies, said that numerous extra units have confirmed for this year.

The event will be held on the weekend of April 27 and 28.

"It means that 2019 bodes to be bigger and better than ever," said Huw.

A British garrison has been confirmed for the allies taking on the besieging French forces.

Each year the weekend takes a backdrop of a time in history, with this year the Siege of Almeida in Portugal setting the scene for the battle.

In the siege a large French force numbering some 16,000 men with 100 guns under the command of Marshal Ney encirled the fortress, a garrison of 5,000 Portuguese and British soldiers.

Each day the re-enactment begins with reveille at 7am, an officer meeting at 9am, drills at 10.15am and 11am, firing displays at 11.30am and noon with the battle getting underway at 3pm.

Entrance costs £5 for adults and £1 for children.
