The new group is calling on Oswestry Town Council for help to get the project off the ground.

Its chairman, Tony Durrell, will attend the council's amenities committee meeting in the Guildhall on Wednesday.

Mr Durrell said the aim was to help vulnerable people at pubs and clubs or leaving premises late at night.

"When these people are identified we take them to a safe place where they can sober up and we can arrange safe modes of transport to get them home safely.

"We also plan in the future to go out into the communities around the town and start bringing them together; with the diversity this town now has it is more important than ever to bring people together to understand each other."

The Street Angels have been given £1,000 from the West Mercia police and crime commissioner's office and will be issued with radios connected to the town's CCTV system.

Other donations have included £500 of items including first aid equipment from Welsh Frankton Mother's Union and flip flops to give out to women struggling in heels from the Shrewsbury Club.

Oswestry-based company MedAid Services Ltd has also offered help, while Shropshire Council had provided a town centre base which will act as a safe place for vulnerable people.

Businesses in the town are also being asked to help
