Morrisons want to build the new supermarket on the old livestock market on Shrewsbury Road.

The site has been sitting derelict for almost five years.

Plans were submitted for the site in June, with the company aiming to create 60 full time jobs, on top of the firm's store in the town centre.

The scheme was due to include a petrol station but that was scrapped as part of revised plans in October.

The proposals were scaled back, with entrances re-located, however the size of the store itself will now be increased.

Full planning permission was granted last week by Shropshire Council, however it is unsure when the work will begin.

Changes were made because of two objections, one from Oswestry Civic Society which objected to the layout of the site.

Concern

The other was from the Environment Agency, which voiced concern over the use of underground tanks for the petrol station.

The application has now been granted but planners have said there are strict conditions which the firm must adhere to.

The planning decision states: "Development shall not begin until a scheme for decommissioning the former Livestock Market groundwater abstraction borehole has been submitted to and approved in writing by the local planning authority.

"The scheme shall be implemented as approved."

The work on the borehole needs to be done, according to planners, to "to protect and prevent the pollution of controlled waters from potential pollutants associated with current and previous land uses in line with National Planning Policy Framework."

The supermarket also needs to carry out a noise assessment report before it begins any work.
