To celebrate the town's links with the Arthurian legend organisers of Oswestry's Heritage Open Day project a special sword and stone stood on the Bailey Head on Saturday and Sunday with people invited to try to draw it out of the stone. The winner was declared King of Oswestry during the open day week.

The winner was 24-year-old Ryan Mondiwa, from Weston Rhyn.

He was delighted to be declared the winner, and revealed that it was also his birthday.

Mark Hignett, from Oswestry Town Museum, who has been organising the Heritage Open Day events, said the sword had been specially made by the British Ironwork Centre and put in the stone block by museum volunteers. It will remain on display within the museum.

He said: "King Ryan said he wanted to be know as Ryan the Righteous."

In celebration of pulling the sword from the stone he received prizes from local businesses including Booka, Christians Jewellers, Aroma Cafe, Engraving Plus, and a Gallon of Joules ale.

Events as part of Heritage Open Day continue until Sunday and include free minibus transport to destinations outside Oswestry town centre.

There are open days at churches, railways, the Llanfyllin Workhouse and Brynkinalt Hall gardens, Llanymynech whard and limeworks and Whittington Castle as well as talks and workshops across the town.

An archaeological dig is taking place on Oswestry Castle.
