Youths have been targeting vulnerable people in a Shropshire village, throwing stones and snowballs at houses and shouting through letter boxes.

The problems in Whittington, near Oswestry, have led to police urging members of the community to be good neighbours and report any worries.

Officers say that they want to nip the anti-social behaviour in the bud.

Police Community Support Officer Dave Hughes, said many of the young people involved had come from outside the area.

He said there had also been reports of some of the vulnerable members of the community being pressured into buying drink and cigarettes for those under age.

"We don't want to stop young people from meeting up and having a good time but we are concerned that anti-social behaviour is escalating in the village," said Mr Hughes.

"There have been reports of stones and snowballs thrown at windows and at cars for instance.

"If people are worried about themselves or a neighbour, they can talk to us in complete confidence. We can give advice on CCTV which can act as a deterrent and is no longer expensive.

"We would rather people contact us, by ringing police on 101, as soon as they are concerned and then we can respond as quickly as possible."
