Others in the county were frantically trying to find replacement flights for their holidays.

Friends, Margaret Bradford and Sandra Trevor, from Oswestry, flew to Barcelona for a weekend break, only to be caught up in the demonstrations and police clampdown during the Catalonian referendum.

Then, hours before their flight home was due to take off, they were told Monarch had gone into administration.

Sandra said: "We got to the airport and we were told that we would be on a Government repatriation flight. They found a plane but then they couldn't get any fuel for it so we had to wait again.

"We have been lucky as we had a good weekend and are back home."

She added that they had seen the demonstrations in Barcelona but it had been quiet when they were there although it had been intimidating to see so many police on the streets.

Victoria Courtney and her partner, Mike, from Knockin Heath fear they will not be able to go on their holiday to Tenerife in a fortnight after they lost their flights.

"When we heard the news we immediately went on line to find another flight. But replacement flights would cost us about £1,000 more," she said.

MORE ON THIS STORY:

Victoria lived in Tenerife for about 10 years, managing apartments.

She added: "I was there when the last financial crash happened about 10 years ago when three airlines went into liquidation all at the same time. It was chaotic. People were stranded on the island and just could not get home.

"Many of them had nowhere to stay as their hotels or apartments were re-booked and many had run out of money. We are disappointed about our holiday but we have not lost our jobs and security."

Samantha Clubbe from Ellesmere feared her husband, David, who works in Spain, would struggle to fly home for Christmas after losing his flight.

"We have been very lucky and he found a replacement flight quite quickly," she said.

The Rous family from Telford also had a frantic time trying to ensure their half-term holiday to Cyprus wasn't ruined.

Tracey Rous said: "We managed to get other flights but a bit of scramble this morning to save the holiday."

Carol Appleton, from Whittington, worried her three day trip to Dubrovnik for her husband's birthday was under threat.

She said: "I had booked for three nights in May with Monarch. I had to quickly rebook them on Easyjet this morning. Luckily I had paid on credit card but I now got the hassle of trying to claim them back from the bank."
