Organisers are appealing for volunteers to help get it on track.

A meeting will be held at the ironwork centre next week for interested clubs, organisations and individuals.

The nearest parkruns for people in the area are currently at The Quarry in Shrewsbury or Erddig in Wrexham. If successful, it would take place every Saturday morning at 9am at the ironwork centre.

Parkrun UK organises free, weekly, 5km timed runs to encourage people of all abilities to take part. There are 464 parkruns in the UK and hundreds more across the world.

Owner of the centre, Clive Knowles said: "Everyone is welcome to come along and have their say and we'd love to see people who would be willing to marshal and volunteer because these events can't go ahead without volunteers."

He also revealed they are close to raising the £3,500 fee needed to get it up and running, but said he is waiting for Shropshire Council to grant the centre planning permission first.

Mr Knowles has applied for retrospective planning permission and is asking for a whole host of new attractions.

"At the moment it's all in the hands of Shropshire Council," he said. "We're expecting to get permission later this month and then everything can start moving ahead but until then we've just got to wait. Parkrun is something they will have considered when looking at the planning application.

"Everyone involved is very excited about it. Oswestry School have said about 50 of their students have said they'd come along to it and I know parkrun tourism is a big thing where runners go around the country trying different runs.

"That is something I'm very keen on. I want people from places like Manchester to come to Oswestry and Shropshire and to continue to put it on the map."

Anyone who is interested in volunteering or donating to the parkrun fee is invited to the meeting on October 10 at 7pm.
