Police, ambulance and fire crews attended the house fire in Springhill in Alkington, Whitchurch, just after 5.30am today.

Two fire engines were called from Prees and Whitchurch to the fire that spread to the ground and first floor of the building.

The 73-year-old man inside was taken to hospital where he is being treated for smoke inhalation.

It is the second time in a month Shropshire Fire and Rescue have attended reports of a fire at the property, which is now being treated as suspicious.

Emergency services were called to the house on July 16, to reports of the roof and door of the building on fire.

Eleanor Harris, communications officer at West Mercia Police, said: "Earlier today police were called to reports of a fire at a property in Whitchurch.

"Initial enquiries suggest the fire may have been caused deliberately."

Police are now conducting enquires into the cause of the fire.
