The pledges have been made by residents and supporters who want to purchase and safeguard the future of The White Lion, in Ash Magna near Whitchurch.

Following an initial public meeting at the end of October, a formal 'community benefit society' and management committee have been established to raise the £370,000 needed for the pub.

Last night(THURS) a further public meeting was held where supporters were briefed on progress and a formal share-raising drive was launched.

Judith Griffin, chairman of the management committee, said: "The White Lion is a much-loved, historic rural pub.

"The response of the community to the risk of its closure has been fantastic.

"We hope to raise sufficient funds to purchase the pub and safeguard its future for the community, developing it as a community asset offering a wide range of services for local people and visitors."
