Unable to get back on his feet by himself, William was well and truly stuck and owners of the Stables at The Foxholes in Wem asked for help from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Local firefighters from Wem and the specialist, large animal rescue team from Wem attended at 9.20am today, and began the lengthy process of getting the horse back on his feet.

Fire Service Station Manager, Jim Barker, said that the crews assisted a local vet using animal rescue equipment, including lifting harnesses and straps.

The horse was safely taken outside and helped back up on his feet just by 11am.

Mr Barker said: "It was a great result to see William back up on his feet and taking in the morning sun."

The large animal rescue team has specialised training and travels across the region to help with stuck, stranded and injured animals.
