New community group set up in Wem following crime increase

A new online community watch group has been set up in Wem following a following a spike in crime over the past few weeks.

These have included thefts from unlocked vehicles, garages and sheds in Wem, and a theft from one of the town’s churches.

Wem Community Watch, which was set up earlier this month, has already got a total of 1,242 members.

Constable David Carpenter, based at Wem police station, said officers had increased patrols in the area and done several stop searches.

Wem resident Mandy Birch said: "With all the thefts and disturbances that have been going on in Wem lately someone has had the mindset to create a Facebook community watch group where locals can share information on the comings and goings of these local criminals/drug users/suppliers.

"We need to work together to collect evidence of what's going on in Wem and report any suspicious activity to the police by calling 101 or reporting anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

"The police are very aware of what's happening, and have requested that people gather as much evidence as they can and report it straight away.

"There are still a lot of crime problems and trouble in Wem. We are all very concerned abut it.

"The crime and public disorder is still just as bad.

"The people of Wem know exactly who the culprits are and have names and photographs of the suspected people.

“They have been reported to the police on numerous occasions but nothing is being done. We have had enough now.”

This week Seven Trent has warned residents in Wem to be aware of a scam where fake workers try to enter homes.

Seven Trent officials said recently there has been an increase in reports from residents in Wem.

Residents say they have been contacted by people claiming to be from the firm and that they needed to check the water supply.

Severn Trent says they only make visits by appointment and people should call them to double check before letting anyone in.
