Shawbury homes plan approved

Fifty homes and a new roundabout on one of the county's main roads can finally be built in a village.

The proposal, for a site off Shrewsbury Road in Shawbury, has been granted permission by Shropshire Council.

The homes will be two storeys high and have room for gardens and parking. At least 15 per cent of the houses will be affordable.

The plans also include a roundabout on the A53 as well as a bus turning area and a car park for the nearby school.

Applicant Lioncourt Homes Ltd said the roundabout would create a suitable and safe access into the site as well as create a traffic calming measure to ensure that cars are forced to slow down prior to entering the village from Shrewsbury.

An outline proposal was given the go ahead in 2015, but now a full application featuring detailed plans has been approved.

Members of Shawbury Parish Council unanimously supported the application.

But they wanted an assurance from Shropshire Council that money will be used to construct a fenced pathway from the site to Poynton Road, adjacent to the north side of the school.

Shropshire Council received seven letters from residents who raised concerns about the extra traffic and impact on wildlife and sewage.

A report by Shropshire Council case officer Karen Townend said: "The site is the only housing allocation within Shawbury in the adopted Site Allocations and Management of Development Plan (SAMDev).

"Furthermore it is accepted, subject to the provision of a new roundabout, that the site is in a sustainable location, on the edge of the existing built development, where it benefits from transport links and the facilities, services and infrastructure offered by the village.

"It will provide additional open market and affordable housing, and will not result in significant loss of agricultural land.

"The proposed layout, scale and design of the development is considered to be acceptable taking into account the context and character of the area, the amenities of the existing residential properties and future residents of the proposed site from the close proximity of RAF Shawbury."
