Firefighters prevented a huge woodchip mound from going up in flames today.

A fire broke out at the Jenkins Yard at Higher Heath near Whitchurch at 3.30am.

Emergency services were alerts after 999 calls saying there was a fire in the yard.

Crews from nearby Prees and Whitchurch were quickly on scene to find a small section of a 440 tonne pile of woodchip and bark ablaze.

A spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said the firefighters dragged the burning material away from the main mound and were able to prevent a major fire.

It took two hours to deal with the fire.
