The fire in Cheswardine was reported at about 4.45pm last Thursday.

It was blamed on embers from the fire being blown into a wood pile by strong winds.

The fire crew from Market Drayton said: "On arrival the incident commander was told by the occupier that they had had a controlled burn which had spread to a quantity of cut wood.

"The crew set about tackling the fire using two hose reel jets, with assistance from the occupier dragging out using farm machinery. They remained on scene for some time, dragging out and damping down.

"Water was ferried from a nearby hydrant."

The firefighters returned in daylight to inspect the scene with thermal imaging, and determined it was safe.

The Shropshire Fire Service advises anyone planning to burn material to notify the service on 01743 260290, and to have a means of putting the fire out on hand.
