Spring fair success for Fordhall Farm

Visitors to farm's spring fair enjoyed getting close up to the animals, touring on the back of a tractor and tucking into pizza made in a clay oven.

The entertainment at the Fordhall Organic Farm's annual spring fair also included archery sessions, a straw 'mosh pit' and an unusual display of duck herding.

A good turnout at the popular annual event was especially important this year, as it could be the last year the siblings who run the farm are able to host the fair.

Charlotte and Ben Hollins are in negotiations with the owner of the field they use for car parking at their larger events, including the spring fair.

"It has been a good turnout, especially considering the weather," said Charlotte.

"We had a great turnout of people ready to come in as soon as we opened up.

"We're pleased to have so many people from the community turn out to support the fair in what looks like will be the last year.

"The dog show has been really popular, the tractor rides are always full.

"It gives people an opportunity to see the farm in the full.

"All of the money that has been raised today will go to support our educational programme."

Storm Hannah's influence on Saturday meant much of the preparation for the fair had to be done early on the same morning, but the team of volunteers and exhibitors managed to have everything ready in time for the start at 10am.

Some of the exhibitors included the Woodland Trust, Dan's Cannons and a wealth of food providers.

Meirion Owen's Quack Pack from Wales proved popular throughout the day, with regular displays of border collies herding a group of Indian Runner ducks around a paddock.

The care farm's manager Bex Syrett hosted a number of the activities on the day, and said she was pleased with how the community had supported the event.

She said: "We get the kids to make their own pizzas with the clay oven, that has been very popular.

"We have gone around the garden and picked herbs to add to it, it is all organic."

Nicola Phillips came to the fair for the first time with her partner Alex and their son Buddy.

Nicola, from Cannock, said: "We just watched the duck show and that was good. Buddy was trying to get in there with them."
