The way has been paved for 12 new houses in the centre of Market Drayton.

Planning permission was granted this week to a proposal by Belford Homes, bringing 12 three bedroom houses to a site off Frogmore Road.

The plans will see a car wash, caravan depot and two flats bulldozed for the new development.

Each of the houses, which will face the Lidl store on Towers Lawn, will have a rear garden.

Councillors gave the plans the green light at a committee meeting on Monday (October 22).

Market Drayton Town Councillor Roy Aldcroft welcomed the development, saying there was a need for starter homes in the town.

He said: "It is quite welcome also because the area needs doing up.

"Coming into town on the bus station the first thing you will see will be a nice new development, as opposed to a wrecker's yard.

"We need some low cost housing in the area for young families and the like.

"One of the town council's priorities is to support the provision of housing across the board.

"There is an awful lack of three and four bedroom houses which are not ideal for starter homes, for small families or for anyone else.

"These homes are all three bedrooms, which will hopefully redress the balance."

The proposal was made by Lever, Turner & Cowdell on behalf of Belford Homes.

It will see 12 of the current 30 parking spaces on the site retained.

On Belford's website, each of the 12 houses is valued at £169,950.
