Market Drayton sweet shop targeted by thieves

An independent sweetshop has been broken into twice in five months, but a community has rallied around in support.

Sweets N Treets in Market Drayton suffered another burglary last week after a theft in May, and owner Sue Nagington said if it happens again she will be forced to close down.

The latest burglary, in which chocolate and cash were stolen, happened on the night of last Thursday or the morning of Friday.

Sue's daughter Katie got a phone call when the shop's back window was discovered broken.

Katie said: "This time they have thrown a rock through the back window, come through the back and helped themselves to the stock again.

"The heartbreak to have a phone call and have to deal with it is horrible and having to wake my poor mum and tell her was horrible.

"If anybody has any information please, please phone the police and let them know. For this to happen again is awful and it’s not fair especially when my mum is trying to keep her independent business going."

In May the burglars took about £300's worth of stock, and Sue had the shop fitted with new locks as a result.

Petty

She said: "Last time there was a lot more taken, this time it was just under £200's worth.

"It really is petty what they actually take, I'm grateful they don't take more of course but it just seems childish.

"Whether it is £10 or £1,000 I can't afford to lose it, if it happened again I would have to shut up shop."

But she said that businesses and individuals in Market Drayton had leapt to support her, fixing the damaged window, installing metal bars and simply offering support.

"It is community spirit all round, people have been popping in to check on me.

"It's what Market Drayton needs to do, stick together and show that this isn't acceptable."

If anyone has any information they should call 101 quoting police incident number 84-S of Friday, October 12.

Alternatively they can report it anonymously to Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.
