Passing out parade marks end of the scheme

Pupils from Stoke-on-Tern Primary School near Market Drayton took part in the initiative.

The course was run by West Mercia Police and gave the children to opportunity to work with local police officers on a range of activities.

Over the past few weeks police officers from Market Drayton safer neighbourhood team visited the school to run the scheme.

It sees pupils take part in sessions learning about subjects such as communication, road safety, security, forensics and anti-social behaviour.

Children take part in a range of activities, including using walkie-talkies and the phonetic alphabet, looking at the use of alarms and security systems around school, learning about road traffic incidents, and finding out about stranger danger.

To mark the end of their course, the school held a passing out parade on Wednesday.

PCSO Andy King said: “The aim of the scheme is to enforce relationships between young people and the police, to give them an idea of the challenges we face in protecting the communities that they live in.

“The sessions have been delivered in a fun way but at the same time important messages have been delivered to the children taking part. I think it has been a great success.

“The programme was delivered after being agreed with the school and also included topics such as communication, forensics, anti-social behaviour and the security of their own and other children’s personal property.”

Meanwhile, year six pupil Tony Nafrue raised about £250 for Children in Need by taking part in a 10k run with his dad before school last Friday.

Staff at the school said he still managed to get home, have a bath and a cooked breakfast before making it to school on time on the day.
