Small explosions were heard from inside the shed when the fire broke out on Wednesday night at Westwood Park.

Emergency calls were made to Mid and West Wales Fire Service at 7.50pm and four fire crews from Welshpool, Montgomery, Llanfair Caereinion and Llanfyllin went to the scene.

They arrived to find flames leaping several feet into the sky and thick, black smoke belching from the shed, sandwiched between two detached houses.

Firefighters concentrated on stopping the fire from taking hold in the houses. Water for relayed to the scene from a nearby hydrant and crews were praised for their teamwork.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "The fire had originated in a garden shed and had spread to two separate detached houses. All persons were accounted for but both properties suffered smoke and fire damage."

He said that firefighters extinguished the fire using six breathing apparatus, three hose reel jets, a thermal imaging camera and small gear.

A neighbour said he heard small explosions as the fire caught hold.

The Fire Service left the incident just before 11pm.
