The members of LilRigs boxing training group trained by Warren Sinden, joined Welshpool Amateur Boxing Club for a litter pick in and along the Montgomery canal in the town.

They were astonished at what they found.

For in just two hours at the weekend the young athletes pulled out of the canal bottles, glasses, traffic cones, nappies and even a shopping trolley.

The trolley was returned to the Tesco supermarket and the manager rewarded the teenagers with chocolate to say thank you.

Mr Sinden, who runs Rigorous Gym in Welshpool, said: “All of these youngsters were out volunteering their time to help give back to the community.

“They all had a great laugh despite the cold weather. Despite the range in ages they showed great teamwork skills to pull together and get a good job done."

“We spent two hours litter picking and the amount we collected was crazy. I really cannot stress enough the importance of putting your litter in the bin. Overall we filled three bin liners along with several other half-filled ones.”

He said that lots of people thanked the young people.

"One passer-by was so impressed to see the youngsters at work, they donated £25 to the boxing club on the spot."

He said the club was planning future events to help the local community.

"I am very proud of all the kids and the parents who gave up their free time.

“This is just a start for the club as we start planning more future ways of helping our local community.”
