The development could be built on land on the site of the former Little Chef in Cefn, Buttington, near Welshpool.

As well as building the homes, work would also be carried out to create new access for vehicles.

Applicant Paul Delves of Delves & Co Ltd submitted the plans for the eight semi-detached homes with Powys County Council planning chiefs.

Mr Delves said he envisages the homes will range from two and three-bedroom homes.

At present the former restaurant site stands vacant, after it ceased trading a number of years ago.

The site is located on the A458 trunk road in Cefn.

According to Mr Delves, the site has been marketed for "a considerable time" but there has been no interest.

Mr Delves said the homes would help meet a "shortfall" of low-cost, family homes.

In the design and access statement for the development, he said: "It is felt this application offers the opportunity to grant planning approval on a windfall site within a designated boundary, for a number of low-cost, family homes that will help to meet an identified shortfall in provision of this type of property."

He added: "With low impact on the surrounding environment and with the benefit of developing a vacant site that is only becoming more unsightly the longer it is left unoccupied, this is seen as the most obvious form of development for this particular site, particularly bearing in mind the unsuccessful attempts that have already been made to market the property with its current town planning class use."
