Work is being carried out to put in thelane on Llanidloes Road in Newtown, as the road travels under Nantoer Bridge.

The work will see the road cut down to a single lane, and will have traffic lights introduced either side of the bridge – a plan that has met with criticism from a number of local residents.

Newtown's mayor, Councillor David Selby, said that the route was now set to be closed from Monday until Friday, while work is carried out.

Writing on Facebook Councillor Selby said he also expected surfacing work to take place the following week.

He said: "I have been notified by Powys Highways that the road underneath Nantoer Bridge will be closed this week until Friday. This is to allow completion of the project safely and quickly. There are pavement works on the East (Maesydail side) to complete. It likely that road surfacing works will be done the following week.

"Signage will be erected to show the closure Monday morning. The diversion will be signposted around the bypass.

"The new cycle and pedestrian path under the bridge will be kept open, and residents within the closure area will be helped with access when required."
