Cigarette end leads to £75 fine
A Newtown motorist has been fined £75 after being caught throwing a cigarette end from a car.
Powys County Council’s Waste Awareness and Enforcement Team issued the fixed penalty notice after a senior council officer witnessed the incident and reported it.
Now the council is warning all smokers to make sure they dispose of their cigarette ends properly using an ashtray or litter bin.
The incident took place in late March when the motorist threw the cigarette end from a car onto the A483 new Llandewi. With the information from the senior council officer, recycling and waste enforcement officers were able to investigate and took appropriate action which saw the motorist being issued with the £75 fine.
Councillor Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Recycling and Waste, said: “Littering is an unpleasant activity which impacts our communities and costs taxpayers’ money to clear up. Smoking-related litter is one of the most prevalent types of litter and these items are often time-consuming and expensive for councils to clear up. They are also unsightly and potentially harmful to the environment.
“I want to encourage everyone to help keep Powys tidy by always disposing of their waste properly. Our aim is to keep the county clean and to create an environment that attracts tourists and businesses to the area.”
