The Montgomery Canal Triathlon is held on May 6 and includes covering the 35 miles of the waterway, by bike, foot and canoe.

People can choose to enter, one, two or all three of the sections, from Newtown to Lower Frankton near Ellesmere.

The closing date for entries is April 22 with entry forms available from montcanaltriath.aol.com.

Freda Davies, one of the organisers, said: "This is a fun event and not a race and so people can take time to enjoy the beautiful scenery and the wildlife along the canal. We attract everyone from families with children to experienced triathletes."

The day starts with the 17 mile cycling section from Severn Way, Newtown to Pool Quay, from 8.30am along cycleway standard towpath.

"The organisers aim to ensure it is safe and enjoyable for everyone by separating hares from tortoises and allowing faster cycling to set off first at the start."

Walkers and runners start from the Crowther Hall Lock at Pool Quay from 10am travelling 11 miles of the canal, much of which is under restoration, to reach Morton near Oswestry.

There the canal section is the final seven miles of canal to Lower Frankton where the Montgomery canal joins the Llangollen canal.

All entrants who complete a section will receive a commemoration medallion made from local slate.

"The triathlon is organised by the Friends of the Montgomery Canal and is supported by the Canal and River Trust in aid of the restoration of the canal. Any donations or sponsorships are welcome."
