Firefighters managed to stop the fire in the semi-detached property spreading to the adjoining home.

Flames went through the roof of the house in New Road in the town. No-one was hurt in the fire.

The alarm was raised just after 2am, with fire crews from Llanfyllin, Llanfair Caereinion and Montgomery responding to the 999 call.

Mid Wales Fire and Rescue service said four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus went into the house with others fighting the fire from outside the property.

The fire had taken hold on the first floor and the roof. It did not spread to the adjoining property.

Crews stayed at the scene until just before 5am.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
